Tateville
United Baptist Church -- 1896
Beginning
Date - 1808
In our
search of records we have not found the date of the actual
beginning of our church. According to Spencer's History of
Kentucky Vol. 2, page 92, Forks of Cumberland Baptist Church
lettered up with The Tates Creek Association in Madison County,
Ky. in 1808. Wesley Short was listed as Pastor at that time.
Form New
Association - 1809
At the
Tates Creek Association in 1809 six churches we dismissed for the
purpose of constituting a new association in Pulaski County. In
October of 1809 Cumberland River Association was formed of which
Forks of Cumberland was one of them.
Move to
Pulaski County - 1802
In 1802
the John & Mary (Hansford) Short family, including their son
Wesley & Rebecca (Owens) Short family, moved to Pulaski County
from Russell County, Virginia.
Other
Related Families
Two other
families of Virginia were very prominent in the early history of
our church and community. They were the William and Nancy Owens
family and the Samuel and Jane (Owens) Tate family.
Move to
Indiana - 1817?
After
about 15 years in Pulaski County, John Short and several members
of his family moved to Lawerence County, Indiana where Wesley and
others started a Baptist Church in the area. It is stated in the
family history that he was a Baptist Minister.
Change of
Name - 1896
it is
believed that the name of the church was changed in 1896 as the
church was called Tateville United baptist Church in the
associational minutes for the first time that year.

Former
Pastors
The
number and the years of service are undetermined until about 1916.
