When
the Cumberland River Association met with the Sinking Creek
Meeting House, Somerset, KY., in 1809 and 1810, a preacher
by the name of John "Raccoon" Smith was there and
no doubt had preached at the Union Baptist Church
which was located at that time in the Stillesville
community. Preacher Smith had great influence with our
people. He continued with us for a while and later joined in
with Barton Stone and Alexander Campbell. Their group was
called Christian Baptist. This was so misleading that
churches and whole associations followed after them. Their
effects were felt in the Cumberland River Association
churches like Sardis, Union, Salem, and others, which were felt
in the movement. While Union Baptist Church started
out
Baptist, the Reformers later divided it. So after that
you
had a Baptist side and a Christian church side, both
owning one half of the building at Union.
In the
1880s, the Baptist sold their half to the Christian side
and went out and joined in with the
Eden
Baptist Church. We firmly believe by Union
Church minutes, of the Cumberland River Association #1
and #2, and the minutes if the 2nd North Concord Association
that the Baptist element
that came of the old Union
Baptist church became the South Eden Baptist
Church, which is present day Pine Hill Baptist Church.
